Tanzen Medical

Improving the diagnosis and treatment of sleep movement disorders

We aim to improve diagnosis and treatment management of sleep disorders through in-home characterization of leg movement during sleep and their relationships with:

  • Periodic Leg Movements
  • Cortical Arousal
  • Autonomic Arousal

Our Mission

The mission of Tanzen Medical is to make the monitoring of leg movements during sleep accessible for the entire population of physicians and patients.
Leg Movements during Sleep (LMS) are biomarkers for sleep movement disorder. LMS fragment sleep and if left untreated lead to heart diseases, stroke, depression, and early death in millions of patients.
Why Monitor Leg Movements during Sleep?

Unmet Medical Need

The monitoring of leg movements during sleep is critical for the diagnosis and management of many sleep-related disorders, but is not practiced outside of expensive sleep studies.
46M
LMS are related to sleep movement disorders including restless leg syndrome (RLS) and periodic leg movement disorder (PLMD) in ≥ 46M people in the U.S.
$600-$5K
The standard of care to measure LMS are sleep studies - polysomnography (PSG) - can cost $600 - $5000 per night, and require invasive instrumentation, limiting their use and preventing long-term treatment monitoring.
86-98%
The limited ability to measure LMS results in misdiagnosis. 86-98% of RLS/PLMD patients are misdiagnosed. Up to 45M patients suffer from unresolved sleep disturbances.
4.2M
Up to 70% of 6M children in the U.S. treated for ADHD have a sleep disorder associated with LMS that cause ADHD symptoms. Treating the underlying sleep disorder may avoid the need for treatment using stimulants.

Our Solution

Diagnosis

Improving the diagnosis and treatment management of sleep-related movement disorders requires augmenting the current clinical evaluations with diagnostic procedures to measure periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS).

Tanzen Medical is working to provide an end-to-end solution for gathering objective and subjective sleep measures.

Leg Movement Classification

Using inertial measures (accelerometry, gyroscopy) and capacitive distance sensing, we determine clinically significant leg movements, classify PLMS using the WASM standards and determine their association with arousal.

1

Clinical Sleep Metrics

Our core product deliver detection of disease biomarkers (LMS, PLMS and Arousal) as well as the standard metrics required to contextualize a nights sleep (sleep efficiency, in-bed times, sleep-times, WASO, etc.)

2

Multi-Night, In-Home Recording

Night-to-night variability of sleep behavior presents a problem for in-lab PSG recording, often limited to a single night. We design our products for multi-night recording to ensure screening reliability.

3

Digital Sleep Diary

Tanzen is developing a sleep diary system, integrated into its web server and RestEaze mobile application, to include patient subjective measures in research studies and patient management.

4

Physician Dashboard

Tanzen Medical's solution is end-to-end. Out website allows Physician to create and manage patient accounts, where the processed patient data is presented to Physicians for interpretation in detailed form.

5

Bi-Lateral Synchronization

Research and clinical accuracy is at the core of our products. We provide solutions that can be used for simple monolateral recording as well as more robust bilateral recording with multi-device synchronization.
